Start working on a workhub task - mark it doing, load its description as working context, and resolve the target repository. Use when the user says to start/work on a task by id or title, or after picking one via task-list.

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. # task-start — Begin a task from the workhub vault

## Steps

1. **Mark the task as started** with the bundled CLI (preferred — it
   validates the status transition, sets `status: doing` + `updated`,
   writes this session's active-task marker, and refreshes the index in one
   step):

   ```bash
   node "${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/task-cli.mjs" start <task-id>
   ```

   Vault resolution order (pass `--vault <path>` to override):
   `WORKHUB_VAULT` env var → the current directory if it is a vault (has
   `tasks/` and `_ai/`) → `vault_path` in `%APPDATA%\workhub\config.json`.
   The CLI refuses `review`/`done` tasks — report and stop in that case.

   **A task with open predecessors is not started either.** When it has
   `depends_on` and any of those tasks is not `done`, the CLI exits non-zero,
   lists them and writes nothing. Report the predecessors to the owner and
   stop. Pass `--force` only when the owner has said in chat to start it
   anyway — never on your own, and never to get around the error.

   *Fallback (no node, or script missing):* edit the task file by hand —
   set `status: doing` and `updated: <today>` in the frontmatter (preserve

How to install

The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261004.f271b7a, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
