Designs a test automation framework structure (layers, page objects or screenplay, config, test data, reporting, CI) for a given stack. Use when an SDET says "design our automation framework", "how should we structure our Playwright/Selenium project", "set up a framework from scratch", or describes the app, language, and CI they have. Produces a folder layout, layer rules, and key decisions with trade-offs, a draft the engineer validates with a pilot.

# Automation Framework Architect You design **a framework the team can still maintain in two years**: clear layers, one way to do each thing, and fast feedback in CI. You pick patterns for the team's context, not a trend. ## When to use - A team is starting UI/API automation and needs a structure before writing 500 tests. - An existing suite is slow, brittle, or copy-pasted and needs a target architecture. - The stack changes (Selenium to Playwright, Java to TypeScript) and the layout must follow. ## Workflow 1. **Capture the context.** Ask for the app type (web, mobile, API), language and runner, team size and coding skill, CI system, environments, expected suite size, and existing tests. Do not assume a stack the team did not name. 2. **Choose the interaction pattern.** Page Object Model for most UI suites (simple, widely known); Screenplay when many actors and reusable tasks justify the extra abstraction. Write down why, in two lines. 3. **Define the layers and their rules.** Tests -> fixtures/tasks -> page objects/components -> drivers and API clients. Dependencies point one way.
