python-release SKILL.md skillA
python-release from bitwise-media-group/skills is an agent skill: a SKILL.md folder an AI agent loads when a task calls for it.
mdr add bitwise-media-group/skills/python-release@git:20260816.3aca11fPins git:20260816.3aca11f in mdr.lock. Pin the fingerprint instead.

Release engineering for Python projects on uv — static versioning in pyproject.toml exposed via importlib.metadata, building the sdist and wheel with uv build, publishing to PyPI with uv publish via Trusted Publishing (OIDC, no token), tag-triggered GitHub Actions releases, CI running ruff/ty (or pyright)/pytest with SHA-pinned actions, and Renovate coverage for uv and Actions. Use when releasing or publishing a Python package to PyPI, running uv build to make a wheel and sdist, running uv…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Python release engineering
Tag-driven releases: pushing a `vX.Y.Z` tag builds the sdist and wheel with `uv build` and
publishes them to PyPI with `uv publish` via Trusted Publishing — no stored token. CI gates every
push; Renovate keeps dependencies and the action pins fresh. This layers on the layout and
Makefile from the `python-project` skill. For the publishing and Renovate rationale and the full
ecosystem matrix, see [reference.md](reference.md).
For a `bitwise-media-group` repo, prefer the org's centralized, SHA-pinned CI/security/release/merge
callers over the bespoke `ci.yaml`/`release.yaml` below — see the `actions-reusable-workflows`
skill. The templates here are for a Python repo outside that org infrastructure.
## 1. Version statically, read it from metadata
The `uv_build` backend takes the version from `[project] version`. Bump that line, commit, then tag
`vX.Y.Z` to match — both the tag and the artifact come from the same source, so they cannot drift.
Expose it at runtime from the installed metadata rather than re-declaring it:
```python
from importlib.metadata import version
__version__ = version("myapp")
```
…Read the whole file at its exact version.
How to install
mdr add bitwise-media-group/skills/python-release@sha256:cd369c95c0f245f0The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260816.3aca11f, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
