Use this skill when the user needs a POSIX shell command synthesized from natural language — "how do I find/grep/awk/find files modified in the last hour", "kill the process on port 3000", "tar this up excluding .git", or any other terminal-task-as-prose. Shells out to the `caro` CLI for safety-validated command inference and presents the suggestion for explicit approval. Refuses to execute the command itself.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# caro-shell — safe shell command inference via Caro ## When to use Trigger this skill when the user asks for help expressing a terminal task as a shell command, especially anything where: - The user describes the goal in prose (`"find python files larger than 1MB modified this week"`, `"rotate these logs and gzip the old ones"`). - The command is non-trivial enough that getting it wrong has consequences (`rm`, `dd`, `chmod`, `find -exec`, anything piped to `sudo`). - The user is on a system where you don't have full context (BSD vs GNU userland, shell flavor, locale). - The user explicitly asks for a "safe" or "validated" version of a shell command. Don't use this skill for: - Programs/scripts that need to live in a file (write the file directly). - Commands the user has already typed and just wants explained (`man` / `tldr` are better). - Pure questions like "what does `awk` do?" (answer directly). …

How to install
mdr add wildcard/caro/caro-shell@sha256:80fa171a5df5298cThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260517.3822f11, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
