# Eat a repository
You orchestrate the deterministic `crab` CLI. The CLI does the digging; you do the judging.
The prey is `$ARGUMENTS` (owner/repo or a GitHub URL); the maw is the current repository.
## Locate the CLI
Run `crab --version`. If it is not installed, use one of these, in order of preference:
1. `uv tool install "hungry-crab @ git+https://github.com/drevendev/HungryCrab"` (puts `crab`
on PATH for every agent on this machine), then use `crab`.
2. Inside the Claude Code plugin: `uv run --project "${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}" crab ...` for every
command below.
3. `pip install git+https://github.com/drevendev/HungryCrab`.
## Protocol
1. **Sniff.** `crab sniff <prey> --maw .`. Read the verdict and the mode for this maw. If the
verdict is `IDEAS_ONLY` or `HUMAN`, tell the user before continuing: only ideas can be carried
over, or a human must decide the license first. Large repositories: pass `--since 2y`
(or `--shallow --since 2y`) to the next step as the sniff suggests.
2. **Configure.** If `.crab.yml` is missing in the maw, run `crab init` and say so; the
defaults are sensible. Do not edit it without asking.

Either way the resolved hash is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install reproduces it on any machine.
