Structured development workflow with Plan/Implement/Review phases, QA validation, context management, and audit requirements. Enforces explicit authorization for remote mutations, risk-based checkpoints, and proportional audit reports. Use when working on complex tasks, multi-file changes, or when the user mentions planning, workflow, implementing features, or needs structured development guidance.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Agent Workflow
Mandatory classification, approval, scope, implementation, and review gates are owned by the workflow rule (`${HANDBOOK_ROOT}/rules/010-workflow.mdc`). This skill owns detailed procedures and templates.
## Golden Rules
**Follow this three-phase approach for all non-trivial work:**
1. **PLAN** → Design solution → Document approach → **WAIT FOR EXPLICIT APPROVAL**
2. **IMPLEMENT** → Code ONLY what was approved → **STOP** when agreed scope is complete
3. **REVIEW** → Verify results → Suggest improvements → Return to PLAN phase
## Critical Violations to Avoid
```diff
- DON'T DO THIS:
User: "Can you add authentication?"
AI: [Immediately starts coding without discussion]
+ DO THIS INSTEAD:
User: "Can you add authentication?"
AI: "Let me design a solution first. Key decisions needed:
- OAuth 2.0 vs local authentication?
- JWT tokens vs session-based?
- User data storage location?
Let's agree on the approach before I write any code."
```
**Why This Matters:**
- Skipping planning → Wasted time, wrong solutions, scope creep
- Implementing unplanned features → Breaking existing code, technical debt

How to install
mdr add d-padmanabhan/agent-engineering-handbook/agent-workflow@sha256:138c3ea43245fe7eThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260819.d23bb73, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
