Compares deployed CloudFormation templates with locally synthesized CDK templates to detect drift, validate changes, and ensure consistency before deployment. Use when the user wants to compare CDK output with a deployed stack, check for infrastructure drift, run a pre-deployment validation, audit IAM or security changes, investigate a failing deployment, or perform a 'cdk diff'-style review. Triggered by phrases like 'compare templates', 'check for drift', 'cfn drift', 'stack comparison'…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# CloudFormation Template Comparison Skill
## Mindset
- Treat the deployed template as the source of truth for what is live, and the synthesised template as a claim about what will be live.
- Compare from the coarse to the fine: structure, counts, added/removed IDs, then targeted deep diffs.
- Classify every difference by risk before reporting; a diff that has not been classified has not been reviewed.
- Keep the evidence: a comparison that is not saved cannot support an audit or an incident review.
## Quick Start
```bash
# 1. Retrieve the deployed template
aws cloudformation get-template \
--stack-name <stack-name> \
--region <region> \
--profile <profile> \
--query TemplateBody \
--output json > deployed.json
# 2. Synthesize the local CDK template
make synth
cp cdk.out/<stack-name>.template.json local.json
# 3. Compare structure
jq 'keys' deployed.json
jq 'keys' local.json
# 4. Compare resource counts
jq '.Resources | length' deployed.json
jq '.Resources | length' local.json
# 5. Find added/removed resource IDs
diff <(jq -r '.Resources | keys[]' deployed.json | sort) \
<(jq -r '.Resources | keys[]' local.json | sort)
# 6. Deep diff of a specific resource
How to install
mdr add pantheon-org/tekhne/cfn-template-compare@sha256:05620f59ee716f6eThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261002.e6369ee, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
