Wraps `buf breaking` to compare a Protobuf schema against a past version, classifies breaking changes by category (FILE / PACKAGE / WIRE_JSON / WIRE), configures buf.yaml rule selection plus per-path exemptions, and gates CI on the exit code. Use when reviewing `.proto` changes in a PR for gRPC services, BSR modules, or schema-versioned message bus payloads.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# protobuf-compat-checking ## Overview `buf breaking` is the canonical Protobuf compatibility checker from the Buf project ([buf-breaking][breaking]). It compares the current schema against a **past version** (BSR module, Git ref, tarball, or buf image) and reports changes that would break clients, servers, or generated code. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved.
