Render Markdown from templates and structured data using Knap CLI. Use when the user asks to apply a Knap template, turn JSON or CSV data into notes, batch-generate Markdown files, or format Defuddle output into a note.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Knap
Use Knap CLI to render Markdown templates with variables, filters, and logic.
If not installed: `npm install -g knap` (requires Node.js 20 or later). Alternatively, use `npx knap`.
Run `knap --help` for available commands and options. Discover the language through the CLI's offline reference:

Use the lists to find names, then request individual help for syntax, parameters, and examples with expected output.
## Usage
Render a template with JSON variables:
```bash
knap render template.md --data article.json -o note.md
```
Supply a template and data inline:
```bash
knap render -t '# {{ title | trim }}' --data-json '{"title":"Hello"}'
```
Override a variable or pipe JSON data:
```bash
knap render template.md --data article.json --set 'title=Custom title'
cat article.json | knap render template.md --data -
```
Data must be a JSON object; its properties become template variables. `--set` overrides literal top-level keys with strings. Use JSON for nested objects, arrays, numbers, and booleans.

How to install
mdr add kepano/obsidian-skills/knap@sha256:ef5666573358cd7dThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260910.8ccef29, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
