Plans and runs time-boxed exploratory testing when tester hours are scarce before a release - one tester with two free 45-minute blocks before code freeze, a high-stakes window such as year-end payroll, or a device and environment the scripted suite never touches. Session-based per the Bachs' SBTM: charters (Explore X with Y to discover Z), 60-90 minute sessions, session sheets with TBS metrics, and the PROOF debrief. Bundles the exploration heuristics as references - Whittaker's seven tours…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# exploratory-testing ## Overview Session-Based Test Management (SBTM) is the dominant framework for managing exploratory testing as a measurable, accountable activity. It was developed by Jonathan Bach + James Bach (1999-2000) and is documented at [satisfice.com/sbtm](https://www.satisfice.com/exploratory-testing). The unit of work is a **session** - a time-boxed (60-90 min) chunk of focused exploratory testing against a mission stated as a **charter**. Sessions produce **session sheets** that capture what happened in a structured-enough format for management to aggregate, while leaving room for the tester to learn freely. Exploratory testing is not "clicking around". ISTQB defines it as testing where "tests are simultaneously designed, executed, and evaluated while the tester learns about the test object" ([ISTQB CTFL Syllabus v4.0.1 §4.4.2, p.44](https://istqb.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ISTQB_CTFL_Syllabus_v4.0.1.pdf)). Human-driven testing has two modes, and this skill owns one of them: | | Scripted manual testing | Exploratory testing | |---|---|---| | Designed | Before execution, by someone else | During execution, by the person running it | …

How to install
mdr add testland/qa/exploratory-testing@sha256:09d0eb5fee9f6e08The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260820.2e2bc4b, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
