Write and debug instruction text on any surface: requests, standing context such as CLAUDE.md, tool and schema descriptions, and prompts written for other model instances.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
**A model that reasons natively does not need to be taught how to think. It needs to be told what done looks like, and left alone.** Instruction text that explains, encourages, or supervises costs more than it buys — the model already does those things, and your text competes with its own judgment. Prompt text lives on four surfaces, and the same words behave differently on each. A rule that helps in a request can tax every turn for months as persistent context. Identify the surface before writing. ## On encountering a defective prompt Do not read past it. Prompt text that violates these rules is found far more often than it is written — in a skill, a tool description, a standing instruction file, a subagent brief. - **Already editing that file** — fix it, in the same change. - **Not editing that file** — name the defect and the fix, once, in a sentence. Then continue the task you were asked to do. - **Flag what changes behavior**, not what offends taste. A stale fact, a contradiction between two rules, a filter that suppresses recall, a rule the model already follows — these cost output. Wording preferences do not. …

How to install
mdr add xobotyi/cc-foundry/prompt-engineering@sha256:a39f24eb675f1233The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260828.1bf32f2, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
