Testing details for the Walnut repo — 5-tier pyramid (unit/integration/e2e/browser/live), per-tier vitest configs & parallelism, how to judge if YOUR change caused a failure (isolated run + HEAD baseline diff), known pre-existing failures, mock-constants helper, live test pattern, Playwright modes. Use when running tests, adding tests, or triaging test failures.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Testing — Implementation Details For testing philosophy, run commands, and anti-patterns, see project `CLAUDE.md`. For the layered pipeline (which tier to run when), see [docs/reference/testing-pipeline.md](../../../docs/reference/testing-pipeline.md). ## Run the cheap layer (start here) ```bash npm run test:quick # 306 pure-logic files, ~51s — the default npm run test:focus <path> # one file/dir, 0.3-30s npm run test:baseline # ⭐ the honest verdict: fails ONLY on NEW failures npm run test:pre-commit # maps your diff → affected tiers ``` **`npm run test:baseline` is how you judge a change.** The suite carries **118 pre-existing failures on `main`** (recorded in `tests/setup/known-failures.json`, measured in a clean clone of `844dc84`). The baseline gate ignores those and fails only on failures absent from the list, so you get a yes/no answer instead of eyeballing an aggregate. Fixed some? `npm run test:baseline:record`. ⚠️ **Never raise the worker budget** (`tests/setup/worker-budget.ts`, 2 workers locally). Uncapped fan-out hard-crashed the dev Mac twice in July 2026. `npm test` …

How to install
mdr add evanzhang008/open-walnut/walnut-testing@sha256:fa043ee2137ae68aThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260923.a2cf102, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
