Build Geometry Nodes trees from Python: node_groups.new, tree.interface sockets, nodes by RNA identifier, links, Repeat and for-each zones, Bundles, and applying the tree as a NODES modifier including the 5.1 vs 5.2 modifier input API. Use when the user generates a GeometryNodeTree in a script, sets modifier inputs from Python, or hits 'Node type ... undefined' or socket identifier errors. Targets 5.2 LTS with 4.5 LTS fallback.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Geometry Nodes in Python
## Trigger
Use this skill when the user:
- Wants to build a Geometry Nodes tree from a script rather than the editor
- Mentions `GeometryNodeTree`, `node_groups.new`, `tree.interface`, `tree.links.new`
- Needs to apply a generated GN tree as a modifier on an object
- Asks about Bundles, Repeat Zones, or for-each Element zones from Python
## High-level shape
The Python pattern for building a Geometry Nodes tree has four phases:
1. Create the node group and its interface (input and output sockets).
2. Instantiate nodes by their exact RNA bl_idname.
3. Wire nodes with `tree.links.new`.
4. Add a NODES modifier on the target object that points at the group.
```python
import bpy
def build_displace_tree():
tree = bpy.data.node_groups.new(name="MyDisplace", type='GeometryNodeTree')
tree.interface.new_socket(
name="Geometry",
in_out='INPUT',
socket_type='NodeSocketGeometry',
)
tree.interface.new_socket(
name="Strength",
in_out='INPUT',
socket_type='NodeSocketFloat',
)
tree.interface.new_socket(
name="Geometry",
in_out='OUTPUT',
How to install
mdr add tmhsdigital/blender-developer-tools/geometry-nodes-python@sha256:d21cace1bc2ae451The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261007.dccca5d, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
