netcdf-processing SKILL.md skillA
netcdf-processing from cxcscmu/skilllearnbench is an agent skill: a SKILL.md folder an AI agent loads when a task calls for it.
mdr add cxcscmu/skilllearnbench/netcdf-processing@git:20260424.d50cf5aPins git:20260424.d50cf5a in mdr.lock. Pin the fingerprint instead.

Reading, processing, and analyzing NetCDF output from lake simulation models.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# NetCDF Processing Skill
## Overview
NetCDF (Network Common Data Form) is a self-describing binary format commonly used for scientific data. GLM outputs simulation results in NetCDF format containing temperature, mixing, and other variables across time and depth.
## Installation & Setup
### Required Libraries
```bash
pip install netCDF4 numpy pandas
```
### Basic Reading
```python
import netCDF4 as nc
import pandas as pd
# Open NetCDF file
ds = nc.Dataset('/path/to/output.nc', 'r')
# List variables
print(ds.variables.keys())
# List dimensions
print(ds.dimensions.keys())
# Read a variable
temp = ds.variables['temp'][:] # Returns numpy array
time = ds.variables['time'][:]
z = ds.variables['z'][:] # depth dimension
```
## GLM-Specific Output Structure
Typical GLM NetCDF output contains:
- **time**: Time index (often hours since simulation start)
- **z**: Depth levels (m)
- **temp**: Temperature (°C) with shape [time, depth]
- Other variables: salinity, mixing rates, etc.
## Data Extraction Example
```python
import netCDF4 as nc
import pandas as pd
def extract_glm_temperatures(nc_file, start_date='2009-01-01'):
How to install
mdr add cxcscmu/skilllearnbench/netcdf-processing@sha256:afacbbeaae4761f6The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260424.d50cf5a, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
