Load when investigating production errors, latency, or trace data — triage order, index patterns, field names, and time-range syntax. Use before hand-rolling a query DSL call or guessing field names.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
Load `xh` before querying. Use `xh-es-search '<index-expression>'` with JSON in the Bash `PAYLOAD` environment variable. `xh-apm-error-groups` builds its own payload.
The wrapper uses `ES_URL` when set; otherwise it derives `https://<esHost>` from `chezmoi data`. Configure the hostname with chezmoi and ensure the matching xh session is provisioned. It fails closed when `esHost` is missing or invalid.
## Triage order
State the hypothesis, bound the time window, and identify the scope (one service / one endpoint / one user / system-wide) before querying anything. Write down what a "confirmed" answer looks like — otherwise absence of evidence reads as evidence of absence.
**Don't start with logs.** Work coarse to fine: error/rate spike (is it real?) → APM traces (which transaction) → APM errors (root-cause code path) → logs (raw context). `trace.id` links all three indices — pull it from an error or slow trace, then `{"term": {"trace.id": "<id>"}}` for the surrounding logs.

This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
