Drop into any repo and generate a structured architecture overview. Maps the codebase, identifies entry points, frameworks, and dependencies — then produces a "start here" guide for new contributors. Use when onboarding to an unfamiliar repository or requesting a codebase or architecture overview.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# 🗺️ Explain Codebase > Uses the Agent Skills package format. Execution depends on the host tools and permissions; consult the frontmatter compatibility requirements where provided. Drop into any unfamiliar repository and generate a complete architectural overview in minutes. Maps directory structure, identifies entry points and frameworks, explains dependencies, and produces a contributor-ready "start here" guide. --- ## Triggers Activate this skill when: - User drops into an unfamiliar repo and asks what it does - "explain this codebase", "give me an overview", "what does this project do" - "architecture overview", "how is this structured", "where do I start" - "onboarding guide", "explain the code", "map this repo" - Starting work on a new project or PR - Before a refactor that needs full system understanding --- ## How It Works Run these exploration commands first, then synthesize into a structured overview. ### Phase 1: Recon (run these commands) ```bash # 1. How to install
mdr add suryast/free-ai-agent-skills/explain-codebase@sha256:acba35c4ddfe3234The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
