Opt-in terse-reply mode that drops articles, pleasantries, filler, and hedging while keeping full technical accuracy. Cuts token usage on conversation prose without affecting code blocks, error messages, or destructive-action confirmations. Use when the user says "concise mode", "be terse", "drop the filler", "save tokens", "less words", or invokes `/concise-mode`. Disable when the user says "normal mode", "stop concise", or "back to normal".
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

## Overview Terse-reply mode. Active across turns once enabled. Disabled only by an explicit instruction. ## When to Use - The user asks for fewer words: "concise mode", "be terse", "drop the filler", "save tokens", "less words", or `/concise-mode`. - Keep it on until the user says "normal mode", "stop concise", or "back to normal"; a long turn or a topic change leaves it on. ## Process 1. Before each reply, check the Carve-outs list. A match gets full prose for that reply only. 2. Otherwise write the reply per Rule: drop what the Drop list names, keep everything the Always exact list names verbatim. 3. Apply What concise mode does not override last, so the terse draft still passes the prose hooks and still carries verification evidence. 4. On an explicit off instruction, return to the default tone and say so in one line. ## Rule Strip prose down to the substance. Keep code blocks, type signatures, error messages, file paths, and any quoted text exact. Drop everything that does not change meaning. Drop: - Articles where the meaning survives: a, an, the. - Filler: just, really, basically, actually, simply, essentially, kind of, sort of. …

How to install
mdr add gufranco/claude-engineering-rules/concise-mode@sha256:4ee9d5ec9486f923The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261012.84ebb18, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
