Use when writing, changing, reviewing the quality of, or sweeping tests - before adding a test, when a suite feels bloated, slow to change, or full of tests that break on harmless refactors, when asked to "prune the tests", "cut low-value tests", "audit test quality", or to clean up a whole subsystem's test surface. Also use when a production export, flag, or hook seems to exist only so a test can reach it.

# trim A butcher trims fat so the cut is worth cooking; nobody trims by weight. This skill holds every test to one value bar: a test earns its maintenance cost by protecting behavior, a credible regression, or an independently meaningful contract. Tests that re-assert the source, repeat stronger proof, couple to implementation, or keep test-only production seams alive are fat. **Core principle:** optimize for confidence, not deletion count. A deletion without written evidence is a guess, and an uncertain candidate stays. Three modes, one value bar: - **Authoring gate** - every new or changed test, at write time. Runs alongside [taste](../taste/SKILL.md). - **Audit** - a focused, read-only-first sweep of one area for junk tests and the seams they demand. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
