# Write useful agent instructions Make behavior explicit with the smallest sufficient document. Read the whole document with the new requirement, then rewrite affected passages so the result reads as if written in one pass. Correct the owning instruction instead of stacking rules, exceptions, or prohibitions beside it. A justified no-change result is valid; a template is a coverage check, not a quota of content. ## 1. Inspect the document and its authority 1. Identify the requested outcome, audience, file paths, scope, and existing owners. Read surrounding documents. 2. Inspect sources supporting facts, paths, commands, and conventions. Separate observed behavior, accepted policy, proposed policy, and unknowns. 3. For project instructions or scoped rules, read [Project instructions](references/project-instructions.md) for discovery, selective template coverage, and maintenance. For other agent-facing documentation, apply the editorial rules below and preserve its owning format. 4. How to install
mdr add firzus/agent-skills/instructions@sha256:6bb638c2593b59f2The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261030.0758757, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
