# Write useful skills Give each skill one clear responsibility and the smallest sufficient instructions. Read the whole document with the new requirement before rewriting affected passages so the result reads as if written in one pass. Correct the owning instruction instead of stacking rules, exceptions, or prohibitions beside it. A justified no-change result is valid; a template is a coverage check, not a content quota. ## 1. Establish the contract 1. Identify the requested outcome, audience, paths, scope, and existing owners. Read surrounding documents and sources supporting facts, commands, and conventions. Separate observed behavior, accepted policy, proposed policy, and unknowns. 2. Establish the intended caller, entry conditions, exclusions, inputs, side effects, and handoff. Reuse an existing skill when it already owns the behavior instead of creating overlapping entry points. Keep narrow corrections within their scope. 3. Choose invocation deliberately, preserving the existing choice unless a change is requested. Manual-only skills use `disable-model-invocation: true` where supported. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
