Use when renaming, moving, extracting, or removing code and every affected location must be known before the first edit — a rename that spans call sites, an extraction that changes a signature, or a removal that might delete something still in use. Trigger phrases: "refactor this safely", "rename X everywhere", "is this code still used", "find everything that calls this before I change it", "preview this refactor". Not for reconciling a feature whose implementation has drifted from its…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Refactor safely Always preview before applying. The discipline: enumerate every affected location before changing one, confirm no critical path runs through the target unexamined, then verify with tests after — never trust that a rename or removal was complete just because it compiled. The workflow derives from the skill templates the `code-review-graph` project auto-installs (MIT, © 2026 Tirth Kanani), rewritten here to be tool-agnostic: every step carries a baseline that needs no graph server. ## Steps 1. **Enumerate every affected location before changing one.** Accelerated: a code-graph refactor tool in rename-preview mode (e.g. `refactor_tool` with `mode="rename"`; discover the real tool name from the server's own listing) returns the full edit list before anything is applied. Baseline: the IDE's rename-refactoring (atomic, reference-aware) where available; otherwise `grep -rn` every reference and read each hit to rule out false positives (shadowed names, string literals, comments). 2. **Check blast radius and whether a critical path runs through the target.** Accelerated: impact-radius / affected-flows calls (e.g. `get_impact_radius`-shaped, …

How to install
mdr add arasz/ai-badger/refactor-safely@sha256:ad3edc54df48fd07The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
