Delegate a sub-task to a new Cockpit session in any project on any engine; returns at once, or waits for the result with --wait.

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

Hand a sub-task to a brand-new session that runs on its own — in another project directory and/or on another engine (codex, deepseek, kimi, glm, ollama, claude). By default you do NOT wait for it: you get a receipt back at once, and the child notifies the user when it finishes.

**`--wait`** — when the arguments contain `--wait`, wait for the child to finish and carry on with its result in this same turn. Strip `--wait` from the task itself. Only the flag decides this: without it, never wait, even when later steps look like they depend on the result — delegate, restate the receipt, and say the result can be checked later.

Use it when the work belongs in another directory, suits another engine, or simply should not block this conversation. For parallel work inside this same repository, your own subagents are usually the better tool.

## 1. Delegate

Decide: target `cwd` (absolute project directory), `engine`, a short `title`, and the task. Write the task as a self-contained brief — the child sees none of this conversation. Put anything longer than a line or two in a brief file, so no JSON escaping is involved:

```bash
BRIEF=$(mktemp /tmp/cockpit-brief.XXXXXX)
…
Read the whole file at its exact version.
How to install
The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add surething-io/cockpit/dl@sha256:02d7ee7d93b481f3
The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261011.98b5364, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
