Logging conventions -- level usage, formatting style, structured output.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Logging Conventions
## Setup
One logger per module, at module level:
```python
import logging
logger = logging.getLogger(__name__)
```
## Formatting
Use `%s`-style formatting arguments, not f-strings -- the message template is preserved for structured aggregator queries:
```python
logger.info("Cleaned up %d expired sessions", count) # yes
logger.exception("SMTP send failed for %s", email) # yes (in an except handler)
logger.info(f"Cleaned up {count} expired sessions") # no
```
`%s` deferral is stdlib-specific -- `structlog` uses kwargs, not `%s`.
## Level Conventions
| Level | Use for |
|---|---|
| `DEBUG` | Cache hit/miss, slow-path internals (opt-in only) |
| `INFO` | Startup/shutdown, admin bootstrap, cleanup counts, rate limit hits |
| `WARNING` | Recoverable anomalies, swallowed exceptions, degraded operation |
| `ERROR` | Unexpected exceptions on operational paths -- use `logger.exception(...)` |
| `CRITICAL` | Reserved for unusable state |

How to install
mdr add jartan-llc/grimoire/logging-patterns@sha256:3938f95d4ee23893The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261023.fc78225, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
