building-effective-agents from michalstrnadel/source-to-skill is an agent skill: a SKILL.md folder an AI agent loads when a task calls for it.

Anthropic's guide "Building Effective AI Agents" (Dec 2024) - the workflow vs. agent distinction, the augmented LLM building block, five workflow patterns (prompt chaining, routing, parallelization, orchestrator-workers, evaluator-optimizer), when an autonomous agent is justified, and how to design agent tools (ACI). Load when designing or reviewing an LLM application or agent, choosing between a single call, a workflow and an agent, picking a framework, or writing tool definitions.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Building Effective AI Agents Source: [Building Effective AI Agents](https://www.anthropic.com/engineering/building-effective-agents) — Anthropic Engineering, 2024-12-19, by Erik S. and Barry Zhang. The article itself notes that much of the tooling landscape it describes has changed since December 2024; the patterns and principles below are what it teaches, not a survey of current tools. ## Thesis Across dozens of customer teams, the agent systems that worked best were not built on complex frameworks but on simple, composable patterns. Start with the simplest thing that works and add complexity only when it measurably improves outcomes. ## Vocabulary: workflows vs. agents Both are "agentic systems"; the split is about who controls the path. - **Workflow** — LLMs and tools orchestrated through predefined code paths. Predictable and consistent; best for well-defined tasks. - **Agent** — the LLM dynamically directs its own process and tool use and decides how to accomplish the task. Flexible; best when model-driven decisions are needed at scale. ## Decision ladder: how much system do you need? Climb only when the rung below demonstrably falls short. …

How to install
mdr add michalstrnadel/source-to-skill/building-effective-agents@sha256:13b22f1a32ec8034The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261004.d77ddfa, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
