# YouTube Transcriber
Capture transcripts from YouTube videos using a local transcription service. The service fetches official YouTube captions when available, or transcribes locally using Whisper.
## When to Use
Use this skill when the user:
- Pastes a YouTube URL (with or without a verb like "transcribe", "summarize", "watch")
- Says "transcribe", "summarize", or "caption" followed by a YouTube URL
- Uses a shorthand like "s", "t", or "ts" followed by a YouTube URL (e.g. "ts https://youtube.com/watch?v=..." to transcribe and summarize)
- Asks to extract, capture, or get what was said in a YouTube video
- Sends just a YouTube URL with no other context
## Prerequisites
The YouTube Transcriber service must be running at `http://127.0.0.1:19720`.
To check if it's running:

If not running, the user needs to start it in their youtube-transcriber project directory:

How to install
mdr add lifesized/youtube-transcriber/claude-code@sha256:9d608e3eb294bd70The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260223.e4c2cad, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
