Use this when writing or reviewing any prose - docs, READMEs, code comments, commit messages, PR descriptions, changesets, and chat replies. Defines plain words over compressed abstractions, verbs over invented nouns, a test for anthropomorphism you can apply to any verb, the punctuation bans, and a hype ban-list.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Writing Voice Write the sentence you would say out loud to another developer. Then check it against the rules below. This covers everything a human reads. A field description, a `//` comment, a commit body, a changeset, a PR, and a reply in chat all get the same voice. --- ## 1. Plain words beat short words This is the rule that matters most and the one that gets broken most. An abstract phrase is shorter than the plain sentence it replaces. Any rule that rewards brevity will pull you toward abstraction. Resist it. **Cut whole ideas. Keep common words.** A sentence improves when you cut a point the reader did not need. A sentence gets worse when you compress a point into a technical-sounding noun phrase. The second one looks like editing and is the opposite of it. Real failures, all written by an assistant explaining its own behavior: <!--prettier-ignore-start--> | Compressed | Plain | |---|---| | local optimum, global monotony | every comment passes on its own. the file reads like one sentence repeated. | | per-comment conformance | every comment matching the rules | | the gradient toward variety is zero | nothing pushes toward variety | …

How to install
mdr add seedcord/seedcord/writing-voice@sha256:2c725a42bd2a38cbThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261021.958c08c, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
