Review a diff or codebase for unnecessary complexity, speculative abstraction, and avoidable dependencies, returning a prioritized simplification (delete) list.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Skill: Over-Engineering Review Review a code change (or an existing module) for unnecessary complexity and return a prioritized **simplification list** — concrete things to delete, inline, or replace with something simpler. The goal is *less code because it is necessary*, not code golf. This skill operationalizes the **Laziness Ladder** from the agentic-coding-playbook (`docs/CODING_PRACTICES.md` §13.1.1). It is inspired by the open-source [ponytail](https://github.com/DietrichGebert/ponytail) ruleset (MIT). ## When to Use - Reviewing a pull request that feels heavier than the problem it solves - A module has grown layers of indirection, config, or abstraction - Before adopting a new dependency for something small - User asks "is this over-engineered?", "can this be simpler?", or "what can we delete?" ## Prerequisites - Access to the diff or code under review - Understanding of what the code is actually *required* to do right now - The project's existing dependencies (to spot reinvention and redundant adds) ## The Non-Negotiables (read first) Simpler is the goal, but the following are **never** removed in the name of …

How to install
mdr add gsa-tts/agentic-coding-patterns/over-engineering-review@sha256:23e0af9981f875fcThe line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
