plate-tectonics-spatial SKILL.md skillA
plate-tectonics-spatial from cxcscmu/skilllearnbench is an agent skill: a SKILL.md folder an AI agent loads when a task calls for it.
mdr add cxcscmu/skilllearnbench/plate-tectonics-spatial@git:20260424.d50cf5aPins git:20260424.d50cf5a in mdr.lock. Pin the fingerprint instead.

Work with PB2002 plate boundary and polygon data to identify plate membership and boundary distances for earthquakes.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Plate Tectonics Spatial Analysis (PB2002 Dataset)
## Data Files
- `PB2002_plates.json` — Polygons for each tectonic plate
- `PB2002_boundaries.json` — LineStrings for plate boundaries
## Plate Properties
```python
# plates.json feature properties:
{ "LAYER": "plate", "Code": "PA", "PlateName": "Pacific" }
# boundaries.json feature properties:
{ "LAYER": "plate boundary", "Name": "PA-AN", "PlateA": "PA", "PlateB": "AN", "Type": "" }
```
## Pacific Plate Boundaries
Filter boundaries where PlateA or PlateB == "PA":
```python
pacific_bounds = gdf_boundaries[
(gdf_boundaries["PlateA"] == "PA") |
(gdf_boundaries["PlateB"] == "PA")
]
```
Note: Some boundary names use separators like `-`, `/`, `\`. Always filter by PlateA/PlateB columns, not the Name string.
## Finding Earthquakes Within Pacific Plate
```python
pacific_poly = gdf_plates[gdf_plates["Code"] == "PA"].geometry.unary_union
eq_in_pacific = gdf_earthquakes[gdf_earthquakes.within(pacific_poly)].copy()
```
## Antimeridian Handling
The Pacific plate spans the antimeridian (±180°). GeoPandas handles this automatically when using `.within()` and `.distance()` with proper CRS. Do NOT manually shift longitudes.

How to install
mdr add cxcscmu/skilllearnbench/plate-tectonics-spatial@sha256:ea1a95816a90f5f6The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260424.d50cf5a, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
