Naming rules for Explainer Studio, covering verbs for functions, nouns for classes, booleans, maps, units, abbreviations, file format fields, CLI commands, GitHub workflows and the glossary. Use before naming or renaming anything in explainer_studio/ (Python and the pages' JavaScript), tests/ or scripts/, before adding a field to a file format, a CLI option or a GitHub workflow, and when reviewing names.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Naming A name says what a thing is, or what a function does, without opening it. A concept has one name everywhere (code, file formats, CLI, skill, pages): the term in [`docs/glossary.md`](../../../docs/glossary.md). A new domain term goes into its domain in the glossary in the same change. A term names what the thing holds or shows, never a bare container word that a reader has to look up (`comment screenshot sheet`, not `comment sheet`; no standalone `sheet`, `item`, `data` or `info`). Parallel things get parallel names: siblings doing the same kind of work share the verb, the word order and the grammar. ## Functions and methods start with a verb A noun alone (`latest_delivery()`, `media_duration()`) hides whether the function reads files, computes or builds. These verbs have one meaning each; use them whenever that is the work, and never for other work: | Verb | The function | |---|---| | `load` / `read` | reads from disk; `load_` returns a validated model, `read_` raw content or a plain value | | `write` | writes to disk | | `list` | returns every item of a kind (the ids in a folder, the installed voices) | …

How to install
mdr add heptameta/heptabase-explainer-studio/naming-convention@sha256:aa33f6ee06f3b54dThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261014.bb251f8, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
