Use this skill when working with the n8n REST API — read, update, or verify workflows on ANY n8n instance. Instance-agnostic: update recipe that strips extra fields on PUT, banned top-level fields, auth header, health endpoint.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. # n8n REST API — Shape Reference (instance-agnostic)
A reusable, instance-agnostic reference for the n8n REST API. Usable on any
n8n instance (a client's fresh one, or your own) without hardcoding host,
instance, or workflow IDs.
## When to Use This Skill
Use this skill when:
- You need to read, update, or verify an n8n workflow via the REST API.
- Prior skills point at a SPECIFIC n8n instance (a host/workflow ID) that does
not apply to the instance you're touching now.
- You hit `400 additional properties` on workflow PUT.
## Auth
- Header: `X-N8N-API-KEY: <key>` (generate at Settings → API; store in the vault by label).
- Base: `https://<n8n-host>/api/v1/`.
## Read a workflow (GET)
`GET /api/v1/workflows/{id}` → returns the workflow JSON.
## Update a workflow (PUT) — the exact recipe that works
n8n rejects extra fields on PUT with `400 additional properties`. Strip to a minimal
4-key payload:

How to install
mdr add jpeetz/agent-skills/n8n-api-shape@sha256:483773f823a572b9The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
