# dig resolve a bounded question, not an entire codebase. investigation is read-only unless the user authorizes changes. a request for a path to a solution is not permission to implement it. no mandatory companion skill or delegation. ## start small 1. name the symptom/question, affected users or boundary, and what answer would let the user act. record material uncertainty and a stopping condition. 2. pick the nearest evidence: an entry point, failing check, log event, or caller. state one or two plausible explanations and what would disprove each. 3. trace directly until the question is answered or a concrete gap requires expansion. follow dependencies forward for mechanism, callers backward for reach; do both only when needed. 4. use safe existing probes or in-memory extraction where useful. writing a script, changing a fixture, restarting a service, or running a stateful probe requires the corresponding authorization. read-only intent alone does not make a command read-only. check history when a behavior's origin or rationale matters, not on every lookup: `git blame`, `git log -p --follow -- <path>`, and targeted commit searches can …

This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
