accurate-distance-calculation SKILL.md skillA
accurate-distance-calculation from cxcscmu/skilllearnbench is an agent skill: a SKILL.md folder an AI agent loads when a task calls for it.
mdr add cxcscmu/skilllearnbench/accurate-distance-calculation@git:20260424.d50cf5aPins git:20260424.d50cf5a in mdr.lock. Pin the fingerprint instead.

Using map projections to calculate real-world distances in meters or kilometers accurately.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Accurate Distance Calculation ## Overview Calculating distances in degrees (EPSG:4326) is incorrect because degrees represent different distances depending on the latitude. Always project to a metric system. ## Choosing a Projection - **EPSG:4087**: World Equidistant Cylindrical (Good for global distance approximation). - **UTM**: Universal Transverse Mercator (Best for local, high-accuracy areas). ## Conversion and Calculation ```python # Project to metric (meters) METRIC_CRS = "EPSG:4087" gdf_projected = gdf.to_crs(METRIC_CRS) target_geom_projected = target_gdf.to_crs(METRIC_CRS).geometry.unary_union # Calculate distance (returns meters) gdf['distance_meters'] = gdf_projected.distance(target_geom_projected) # Convert to Kilometers gdf['distance_km'] = gdf['distance_meters'] / 1000.0 ``` ## Finding Extremes ```python # Furthest point furthest = gdf.nlargest(1, 'distance_km') # Closest point closest = gdf.nsmallest(1, 'distance_km') ```

How to install
mdr add cxcscmu/skilllearnbench/accurate-distance-calculation@sha256:2abd128e44883fedThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260424.d50cf5a, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
