Use when adding CLI argument parsing to a .NET app or dotnet tool: System.CommandLine 2.0.x GA idioms (parse-first, HelpAction/VersionOptionAction detection, Option.Validators, FromAmong), parser-landscape verdicts (Cocona archived — don't adopt), and the stdio-MCP trap where help/version must render to stderr. Includes Cocona-maintenance guidance for existing tools.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# .NET CLI argument parsing Choosing and implementing CLI args for .NET console apps and global dotnet tools (PackAsTool). State verified 2026-08-04 against primary sources; full worked example: the repo's CLI-args design doc (`docs/plans/cli-args-parsing.md`). ## Parser landscape (as of 2026-08) | Option | Status | Verdict | |---|---|---| | System.CommandLine 2.0.x | GA Nov 2025, 2.0.10 current, MIT, net8.0 asset (zero deps), used by dotnet CLI, trim-friendly | **default choice** for flat option sets | | Spectre.Console.Cli | 0.55.0 stable, still 1.0.0-alpha; very active | good, but a command framework (DI, nested commands) — overkill for ~10 flat options | | Microsoft.Extensions.Configuration.CommandLine + EnvironmentVariables | ship in the ASP.NET Core shared framework (zero new packages); `CreateBuilder(args)` already layers CLI > env > appsettings | key-value ONLY — not a parser: unknown `--keys` silently stored, no --help/validation, trailing valueless `--key` dropped, `--key --other` consumes next token as value | | Cocona | archived 2024 | do not adopt | | McMaster.Extensions.CommandLineUtils | maintained, minimal | third-party, thinner than the official parser | …

How to install
mdr add arasz/ai-badger/dotnet-system-commandline@sha256:60f910c17862aaa3The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
