Distill principles from the installed skills into the always-loaded rules layer.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# rules-distill — promote environment-specific facts to rules Scan installed skills, find principles that belong in the **always-loaded rules layer**, and distill them into rules — appending to, revising, or creating rule files. The skill produces candidates and verdicts; it **never edits rules without your approval**. ## When to Use - Periodic rules maintenance (monthly, or after installing new skills) - After a `skill-stocktake` reveals patterns that should be rules - When rules feel incomplete relative to the skills in use ## Phase 1 — Inventory (Glob, exhaustive) Enumerate with Glob (no script): - Skills: `~/.claude/skills/*/SKILL.md` - Rules: read every `~/.claude/rules/**/*.md` in full — the corpus is small, so no grep pre-filter is needed > Glob targets only skill definition files, so dependency markdown under `.venv` / > `.pytest_cache` is excluded structurally. Present the counts (skills scanned, rule files, headings) before analysis. ## Phase 2 — Cross-read & Verdict (inline, holistic) Read every skill body and every rule into one context and analyze them together — extraction and matching are a single pass. How to install
mdr add shimo4228/claude-harness/rules-distill@sha256:8841ce4cd6dd52f8The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261010.b5821aa, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
