Give every heuristic, sample, regex parser, cache, timeout and derived number the one line saying what it gets wrong. Use when a change adds an approximation, a bounded read, an estimate or a retry bound, or you need to know what a code is bad at. Auto-triggers on: "is this exact", "add a caveat", "what are the limitations", "document the limits", "how accurate is this".
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Caveat Most useful tools are approximations. That is fine. An approximation **presented as a fact** is not: the reader trusts the output, it is wrong in a way nobody wrote down, and the trust is spent before anyone notices. The rule is `rules/caveat.md`. This is how to apply it to a diff. ## 1. Find what owes a line ```sh devil caveat # whole tree devil caveat path/to/changed.go ``` It flags a file that reads as best-effort and carries no `Caveat:` marker. Read its own header first — it over-reports on hedge words in ordinary prose and under-reports badly on approximations written without any tell, so treat every row as a prompt to look, never a verdict. The legacy `Ponytail:` marker still counts and is reported as INFO; a lowercase `ponytail:` or `caveat:` is not a marker at all. Then check what the tool cannot see in the change itself: - Parsing source with a regex instead of an AST. - A sample, a `head -n`, a `LIMIT`, a partial scan standing in for a full one. - Existence used as a proxy for a property — a test file's *name* standing in for coverage. - A timeout, a retry bound, a cache TTL: each one is a guess about how long is too long. …

How to install
mdr add univers42/claude-deal-with-the-devil/caveat@sha256:78b4447b6743e5dcThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260930.06ed519, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
