Turn a working tree into a history someone can read, revert and bisect. Use when changes are uncommitted, one commit mixes several concerns, a message does not say what changed, or a branch needs tidying before review. Auto-triggers on: "commit this", "write a commit message", "split these changes", "prepare a PR", "clean up the history".
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Commit craft A commit is a message to whoever is bisecting at 3am, and that is usually you. The two properties that matter: each commit does **one** thing, and each commit **builds and passes**. Everything else follows from those. ## 1. Look at what you actually have ```sh git status git diff # unstaged git diff --staged # staged ``` Read the whole diff before writing anything. Two things you are looking for: - **Accidents** — a debug print, a commented-out block, a `.env`, a large binary, a hardcoded token, a stray formatter sweep across files you never touched. - **Seams** — where this tree is really two or three changes wearing one hat. ## 2. Split it One logical change per commit. If the message needs "and", it is two commits. - **Never mix a refactor with a feature** (`rules/refactor-common.md`). A rename across 40 files plus one behaviour change is a diff nobody can review — and reviewers approve what they cannot read. - A fix and its regression test go **together**. The test is what proves the fix. - Formatting-only sweeps get their own commit, so the real change stays legible. ```sh git add -p # stage by hunk …

How to install
mdr add univers42/claude-deal-with-the-devil/commit-craft@sha256:11178f7901a6ef46The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260930.5b26a1e, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
