Search and analyze biomedical literature from PubMed using the free E-utilities API. Use when researching medical topics, discovering clinical papers, fetching article metadata by PMID, performing deep paper analysis, or downloading open-access PDFs from PubMed Central. Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# PubMed Search
Search and analyze biomedical literature from PubMed using the free NCBI E-utilities API.
## When to Use
- Discovering biomedical or clinical papers by keyword, author, journal, or date range
- Fetching structured metadata (title, authors, abstract, DOI) for a known PMID
- Performing deep analysis of a paper when only the abstract and metadata are available
- Downloading open-access full-text PDFs from PubMed Central (PMC)
- Building a candidate list before running `triage-paper`
## When Not to Use
- The paper is already known (DOI, URL) — go straight to `triage-paper`
- A `semantic-scholar` MCP or PubTator MCP is configured — prefer the MCP; it returns structured data with no rate-limit risk
- The search is for general academic literature — use `google-scholar-search` or `semantic-scholar-search`
- A candidate JSON already exists at `/tmp/<topic>-candidates.json` — reuse it

How to install
mdr add pantheon-org/tekhne/pubmed-search@sha256:20b2b67ed6ddbce9The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260721.cca71b6, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
