Use when a researched task must become an executable plan — "decompose this", "split this into steps", "turn the research into a plan". Turns a brief into a `task-plan`: a DAG of steps with acceptance criteria, dependencies, effort and owned files; records it through the `task-graph` server (or its CLI twin), re-authors it when review finds defects, and names the join rule and the no-server fallback. `task` runs this in its plan phase; `quick-task` never does.

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# task-decomposition

Turn a researched brief into one validated `task-plan`: a workflow DAG of `step`s, each one
lane's worth of work with acceptance criteria a verifier can fail. The plan is the contract
the `task` skill dispatches against; the graph is its single source of truth.

Before you split anything, read `references/decomposition-method.md` — it carries the worked
method, worked good and bad splits, and the MoE handoff. When a plan section, persona, or
another skill names a planning unit ("package", "subpackage", `WPn`), consult
`references/plan-vocabulary.md` for that surface's disposition. Before calling any tool, read
`references/mcp-plan-tools.md` for the exact input shape and its error code.

## When to Use

- A `task` run finished analyze and holds a research record; planning is the next phase.
- Someone asks to "decompose this", "plan this out", "split this into steps", "turn the
research into a plan", "what is the work breakdown".
- Review findings changed the step set and the plan must be re-authored before execution
(`plan_replace`), or a plan was rejected and needs a new shape.

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add arasz/ai-badger/task-decomposition@sha256:325eb121a7be70c3

The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
