Use when planning a work item's parts or dependencies, correcting a duplicate or wrong attachment, declaring an item a tracker closed still unfinished, or deferring unfinished work as a loose end. Also use when picking up, releasing or completing a loose end, continuing another session's claimed work, or answering what to work on next. Records declared structure and execution ownership through kcap-workitems. Ordinary attachment alone needs declare_work_item, not a fabricated breakdown.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Work items — declaring breakdown and dependencies A work item's **breakdown** (a parent broken into parts) and its **dependencies** (one item blocks / is blocked by another) are things you **declare** through the `kcap mcp workitems` tools. The server never infers them — if you don't declare the structure, the work item has an empty topology and Home renders no blockers, no dependency graph, and no `n/m parts` progress figure for it. Only declare structure that is **real and you are confident of**. Fabricated or speculative parts/relations are worse than none. A single indivisible task needs no breakdown. ## When to use these tools - You've planned a work item as several sub-tasks → create the part items and declare the parent→parts breakdown. - You know one item must be finished before another can start → declare the dependency. - The structure changed (a part was dropped, a dependency no longer holds) → retract it. - You want to see the current structure → read the topology. - Two items describe the same work (a title-only item you created and the issue/PR-keyed item the server minted) → merge yours into the keyed one. …

How to install
mdr add kurrent-io/kcap-cli/work-items@sha256:298eb83cf4c5abc4The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261028.7f5a203, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
