Generate memes from 170+ classic templates using the free Memegen.link API. Search templates, generate captioned images, and download them for posting. No API key required.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

## Overview
Generate classic memes using the [Memegen.link](https://api.memegen.link) API — a free, open-source, stateless meme generator. No API key, no auth, no rate limits. Just URLs.
The API has **170+ templates** covering all the classics: Drake, Distracted Boyfriend, This is Fine, Change My Mind, Always Has Been, etc.
## How It Works
The API is entirely URL-based. Every meme is a deterministic URL:

No POST requests needed for basic generation — just construct the URL and fetch it.

All operations use `bash` with `curl` and `python3`.

How to install
mdr add vellum-ai/vellum-assistant/meme-generator@sha256:912708f071d5223fThe line at the top of this page pins the label v0.1, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
