Use when writing or reviewing .NET BackgroundService tests with FakeTimeProvider/TimeProvider: lost-first-Advance semantics, inline-vs-threadpool timer callbacks, poll-loop test honesty (invocation counters, not side-effect counts), tick derivation from timeouts, DI registration smoke tests, vacuous-gate detection. Verified on .NET 10; includes an empirical probe script.

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# dotnet-hosted-service-testing

## Trigger
- Writing tests for a `BackgroundService` (ExecuteAsync loop, interval polling, periodic jobs).
- Reviewing tests that use `FakeTimeProvider` / `TimeProvider` (e.g. `Microsoft.Extensions.Time.Testing`).
- Judging whether hosted-service tests honestly cover the loop, interval, dedup, error-tolerance, and DI-registration paths.

## FakeTimeProvider + BackgroundService semantics (empirically verified on .NET 10)
1. **`StartAsync` does NOT run `ExecuteAsync` on the caller thread.** The loop body starts on a threadpool thread; `StartAsync` returns before the first pass runs. Consequence: `time.Advance(...)` immediately after `StartAsync` is reliably **LOST** — the `Task.Delay`/`PeriodicTimer` timer isn't registered yet. The first advance silently does nothing.
2. **Timer callbacks fire inline on the `Advance` caller thread**, but the `Task.Delay` continuation is queued to the threadpool (`RunContinuationsAsynchronously`). After each `Advance`, give the continuation real time to land (`await Task.Delay(100, TestContext.Current.CancellationToken)`), then assert.

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add arasz/ai-badger/dotnet-hosted-service-testing@sha256:5417a5ecb70ff37d

The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
