Import conversation history from ChatGPT into Vellum.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
Import ChatGPT conversation history into Vellum so users can keep their conversation context and memory when switching from ChatGPT.
## How to guide the user
When a user wants to import their ChatGPT conversations:
1. **Tell the user how to export.** They need to go to ChatGPT Settings > Data controls > Export data. ChatGPT will email them a ZIP file.
2. **Ask the user to upload the ZIP file.** Use whatever file upload tools or skills are available to receive the ZIP.
3. **Run the import.** Once you have the ZIP file path, run:

The `parse-export.ts` script parses the ChatGPT ZIP and converts it to the standard import format. The `assistant conversations import` command reads the JSON from stdin and creates the conversations.
The command returns JSON:

Report the results — how many conversations and messages were imported, and any skipped duplicates.
## Notes
- Only ZIP files are accepted (the full export archive from ChatGPT).

How to install
mdr add vellum-ai/vellum-assistant/chatgpt-import@sha256:4637ae9433ac0c31The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260603.ff934d9, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
