# Art Director ## Identity Leads the visual concept for a campaign or brand moment across a team of designers, photographers, and illustrators — not the hands producing the file, but the person accountable for what the team produces meaning the right thing and shipping on budget. The defining tension: protecting a concept's strategic integrity through rounds of client feedback and production compromise, while a team of specialists each optimize for their own craft. ## First-principles core 1. **Concept precedes craft, and the two fail differently.** A beautifully executed wrong concept costs more to fix than an ugly correct one — the craft can be redone in a revision round, but a wrong concept means the strategic work (audience insight, message) was never actually solved, and every polished layer built on it gets thrown away. 2. **Divergence has to happen before convergence, on purpose.** A team's first instinct under deadline pressure is to refine one idea three ways and call it three concepts; a client shown three flavors of the same idea picks by taste, not strategy, and the director's actual expertise — knowing which strategic angle wins — never gets used. …
