Detect and analyze heap spray attacks in memory dumps using Volatility3.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Analyzing Heap Spray Exploitation ## Overview Heap spraying is an exploitation technique that fills large regions of a process's heap with attacker-controlled data (typically NOP sleds followed by shellcode) to increase the reliability of code execution exploits. This skill covers detecting heap spray artifacts in memory dumps using Volatility3's malfind, vadinfo, and memmap plugins, identifying suspicious contiguous memory allocations, scanning for NOP sled patterns (0x90, 0x0c0c0c0c), and extracting embedded shellcode for analysis. ## When to Use - When investigating security incidents that require analyzing heap spray exploitation - When building detection rules or threat hunting queries for this domain - When SOC analysts need structured procedures for this analysis type - When validating security monitoring coverage for related attack techniques ## Prerequisites - Python 3.9+ with `volatility3` framework installed - Memory dump file (.raw, .vmem, .dmp format) - Understanding of virtual memory layout and VAD (Virtual Address Descriptor) trees - Familiarity with common shellcode patterns and NOP sled encodings ## Steps ### Step 1: Identify Suspicious Processes …

How to install
mdr add andycungkrinx91/konoha/analyzing-heap-spray-exploitation@sha256:93825dc2e7d0ba8cThe line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
