Survey a codebase for shallow modules and produce a ranked report of consolidation opportunities with before-and-after diagrams.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
## Overview Find the parts of the codebase where the interface is doing too little work for the implementation it presents, and recommend consolidations that hide complexity behind smaller interfaces. Output is a Markdown report by default; `--html` produces an HTML variant for browser viewing. ## When to Use - Understanding one concept in an area means opening many small files, and changes there keep touching all of them. - Before a `/refactor` of module boundaries, to rank which consolidation pays off first. - `/investigate` reported that a bug had no correct seam for its regression test. - For broad architecture debt across the whole project, use `/assessment` first; for executing a chosen consolidation, use `/refactor`. ## Vocabulary Use these terms consistently in every finding. Full definitions in [`VOCABULARY.md`](VOCABULARY.md). - **Module.** Anything with an interface and an implementation. A function, a class, a package, a layer of slice. Scale-agnostic. - **Interface.** Everything a caller has to know to use the module correctly. Types, invariants, error modes, ordering constraints, configuration, performance characteristics. Not only the type signature. …

How to install
mdr add gufranco/claude-engineering-rules/module-audit@sha256:1b628064a396193fThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261013.02cb8cd, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
