Use when committing or splitting a large change — tests whether it splits into easy-to-review smaller changes: mixed subjects, mechanical change, buried helper, broken bisect.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Change Splitting — One Logical Change Per Unit
Capability: reviewer can understand, build, test each unit in order without context-switching themes.
## GC-30 — One logical change per commit/PR
- One logical change spanning many files = one commit.
- Two subjects same file = two commits (avoid "please split this up, don't mix SoC with evm stuff").
- Distinct transformation buried in larger one = own commit.
- Don't over-split: 500 edits one file as 500 commits is its own error.
## GC-31 — 200-line trigger to examine for seams
When single source file ≥200 changed lines, examine for separable seams — examination required, not auto-split:
- Mechanical interface/type conversion vs behavioral change riding on top
- Code moved unchanged vs rewritten
- Case already handled correctly needing result reported differently vs genuinely new algorithm
- Helper extracted vs first caller of that helper
Document examination even when keeping together.

## GC-32 — Thematic grouping, not interleaving

How to install
mdr add rikvanriel/code-hygiene/change-splitting@sha256:4e217f70229fddd6The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.3, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
