Use when a function is too long, nests too deep, or mixes themes. Extracts helpers that earn their names.

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# Code Structure

<!-- GC-40 --> Prefer minimal obvious fix. Do not duplicate to rename; rename is its own change when safe.

## GC-41 — Extract by logical theme, helper has intent name

- One helper = one theme. Name by what it means, not how it's implemented.
- If split introduced a dep chain, order: preparatory helper before patch that needs it, or split to separate commit with "No change in behavior" or "Prepare for..." if upstream allows preparatory trailers.
- When a hunk unrelated to patch's purpose rides along, split it out: "this doesn't affect any functionality before nor after the core of this patch" — separate commit.

## GC-42 — Function length signal (not hard gate)

- Aim: majority functions ≤20 lines. Hard smell: >40 lines → examine for extractable logical pieces.
- Size alone doesn't reveal seam; look for: mechanical conversion vs behavioral change; moved unchanged vs rewritten; case already correct just needing result reported differently vs genuinely new algorithm; helper extracted vs its first caller.

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add rikvanriel/code-hygiene/code-structure@sha256:43c581cb9b550a39

The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.1, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
