Fixes a performance target before any optimisation starts, then measures against it until it passes. Use when something is slow and the work should stay bounded, or when an optimisation is proposed with no number attached to it. Auto-triggers on: "make it faster", "is this fast enough", "optimize this", "performance budget", "it feels slow", "reduce latency".
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Performance budget Two failure modes, and a budget kills both. Without a target you either optimise code nobody waits on, or you tune forever because "faster" has no end. A budget makes performance a **pass/fail gate** like every other one. Pairs with `agents/benchmarker.md`, which measures. This decides what the number should be *before* the measuring starts. ## 1. Name the number first — before touching anything Write the budget down **before** you profile, so the measurement cannot quietly become the target. - **Who waits, and for what?** "The dashboard renders" is a budget. "The service is fast" is not. - **Which percentile?** p50 is the good day. **p95 or p99 is the product**, because the slow tail is what people remember and complain about. - **What number, from where?** An SLA, a competitor, the previous release, or a human threshold — 100ms feels instant, 1s breaks flow, 10s loses the user. - **Budget the resource too**, not just time: memory ceiling, allocations per request, bundle bytes, query count, syscalls. For a UI, the ones users feel: **LCP** < 2.5s · **INP** < 200ms · **CLS** < 0.1. ## 2. Measure the baseline — before any change ```sh …

How to install
mdr add univers42/claude-deal-with-the-devil/perf-budget@sha256:43ff39d2f112a325The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261017.fcaf2cc, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
