Designing trace topology and semantics: selecting actionable span boundaries, stable operation names, kinds, status and attributes; modelling synchronous, asynchronous, messaging, batch, retry and long-running workflows with parentage and links; and making traces usable with metrics, logs and profiles during incidents. Use when traces are noisy, fragmented, mis-parented, high-cardinality, misleading about errors, or unable to model batches and asynchronous causality. Sampling, propagation…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Distributed Tracing Design ## Purpose Model causal and temporal work so a trace supports a concrete operational question. Span trees are not call-stack recordings: parentage expresses one primary causal relationship, links express additional or cross-trace relationships, and timing comes from each span's own start/end—not from an assumption that parents must wait for or enclose children. The design must follow the pinned OpenTelemetry semantic-convention version. Protocol domains have different stability and migration rules. The protocol guidance here was reviewed against semantic conventions 1.44.0; this is a reference baseline, not an upgrade target. Use the project's emitted conventions when they differ. This is a telemetry-modeling skill, with no Java syntax baseline or executable examples. Inspect the target language/runtime, resolved OpenTelemetry API/SDK and instrumentation, collector and backend versions, plus semantic-convention opt-ins and schema URLs. Their compatibility requirements govern implementation; do not upgrade to match the online docs. ## Workflow ### 1. Define questions and units of work …

How to install
mdr add robsonkades/agent-skills/distributed-tracing-design@sha256:4595493f63652817The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261016.c769bd8, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
