Software engineering best practices grounded in C.S. Peirce's abductive reasoning and his triadic framework (abduction–deduction–induction, sign–object–interpretant, Firstness–Secondness–Thirdness). Use this skill whenever the user is debugging a defect, investigating an incident or outage, doing root cause analysis, reviewing code, writing a postmortem, naming things (variables, APIs, services), making architectural or design decisions under uncertainty, or asks for a…

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# Abductive Engineering

A methodology for software engineering that applies Charles Sanders Peirce's logic of inquiry. Peirce identified three irreducible modes of inference and argued that all genuine inquiry cycles through them. Software work — especially debugging, design, and review — is inquiry, so the cycle applies directly.

The two core tools of this skill:

1. **The inference triad** (abduction → deduction → induction) — the engine of debugging, incident response, and design.
2. **The semiotic triad** (sign → object → interpretant) — the lens for naming, APIs, code review, and documentation.

A supporting lens, Peirce's **three categories** (Firstness, Secondness, Thirdness), is explained in `references/peirce-foundations.md`. Read that file when the user wants theoretical depth, asks "why does this work", or requests teaching material about the framework itself. For everyday application, this file is sufficient.

## Part 1: The Inference Triad — Debugging and Investigation

Peirce's canonical form of abduction:

> The surprising fact, C, is observed.
> But if A were true, C would be a matter of course.
> Hence, there is reason to suspect that A is true.

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add annatchijova/vigia-intent-analysis/abductive-engineering@sha256:ed8dce445420a1d9

The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260705.85daaad, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
